Ever heard of emotional contagion?
Maybe. Maybe not. Either way, we'll explain.
Emotional contagion, as unapologetically plagiarized from Google, "is the tendency for two individuals to emotionally converge. One view developed by Elaine Hatfield et al. is that this can be done through automatic mimicry and synchronization of one’s expressions, vocalizations, postures and movements with those of another person.
In other words, it means that if you see a sad person, you're likely going to feel sad. If you see a happy person, you're likely going to feel happy. If you see Garret McNamara, you're likely going to I don't know maybe light yourself on fire and whip into a wave at Cortes Bank? Yahoo!
Basically, it means that emotions are contagious. Here's Ian Gouveia, about as happy as happy can be. And you can feel it, can't you?
