There was an interesting vibe on the beach. Is this supposed to be fun? Or is this supposed to be serious?
After years of focusing more on the former and less on the ladder, Volcom's TCT tour has blossomed into a truly unique event. They gave away $30,000 to the best 20 and under kids in the world at firing Lowers. That's some serious stuff — but the event is still free to enter, and still focused on fun.
And with that, all of of the sudden the TCT has developed into one of the most important contests for the young surfers all around the globe.
You got guys like Wesley Dantas going up against guys like Griffin Colapinto and guys like Sammy Pupo against guys like Jake Marshall. Big scores were boasted nearly every heat. It was an accurate temperature-check for the state of young talent in the world — scorching, by the way — and it was amazing to watch.
And in the age of NSSA and ISA and ESA and WSA, it sent a real message. Contests can be serious AND fun. Because, after all, that's what surfing is. WSL, you listening?
