Bethany Hamilton is the most widely recognized surfer in the world.
It’s crazy, but it makes sense. The girl who lost her arm to a hungry Tiger Shark has had movies, books, and countless articles written about her. She overcame loss of limb to become one of the greatest female surfers of all time, handicapped or not. Through that, she has become one of the most prolific surfers the world has ever known.
Jimmy "Ulu Boi" Napeahi was also attacked by a shark, but his story isn’t as widely known. Maybe it’s because he didn’t lose an appendage or perhaps it’s because he’s not an adorable blonde girl. Either way, Ulu Boi’s story deserves to be heard. That’s why Ulu and and Etienne Aurelius created ULUALOHA, to share some insight into the life of the young Hawaiian.
After his near-fatal incident two years ago, Ulu Boi has made a serious dent out at Pipeline. Now considered a legitimate force in the lineup, he gets great waves on a regular basis. He is already well down the path of achieving his lifelong dream of becoming a pro surfer. We wish him the best in the rest of his career.
