The best way to begin a North Shore spectating session is to see Nathan Fletcher amble down the beach on a huge day, enormous surfboard under his arm, often headed toward a lesser-known patch of reef. Sure, he’s a world famous professional surfer, but he’s a quiet presence on the sand, no hangers-on or groupies fawning along his path. It’s just Nathan, his massive board, and his galactic self-assuredness as he strokes out solo to a detonating outer reef you’ve never heard of, and don’t want anything to do with anyway.
