A Look Back: Sonny Miller Talks Tom Curren’s First Wave At J-Bay

Commemorating the two-year anniversary of Sonny's passing

Renowned surf filmmaker Sonny Miller passed away two years ago last Friday. The man responsible for many of the ’90s’ most beloved surf films and perhaps surfing’s most famous series — Rip Curl’s The Search — also watched one of surfing’s most supreme pairings ever: Tom Curren, the master of the right-hand point, at Jeffreys Bay, the best right-hand point in the world. No one had taken a maiden voyage at J-Bay so gracefully or flawlessly; who better to tell the story than Miller himself. With the J-Bay finals looming, we thought we’d bring you this flashback about a few of surfing’s best, from one of surfing’s most admired filmmakers.
